Zachary S. McCarty, O.D. completed his undergraduate work at Transylvania University in Lexington, KY, during 2002, earning a B.A. in Biology with a minor in Philosophy. In 2006, he received his Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Optometry (UAB). While at UAB, Dr. McCarty was selected by the Dean as the Outstanding Optometry Student in his class. In addition, his classmates presented him with the class “Leadership Award”. Dr. McCarty completed a residency in Pediatrics and Ocular Disease at SouthEast Eye Specialists in 2007. Upon completion of his residency, Dr. McCarty joined the practice as a consultative Optometrist and fulfilled the role of Chief Medical Information Officer from 2008-2019.
Dr. McCarty is a past President, current Third-Party Chair, and AOA Federal Advocacy Representative (AOA-FAR) of the Tennessee Association of Optometric Physicians, and an active member of the American Optometric Association, serving as the Chair of the Quality Improvement and Data Committee with a new focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI). He has participated in the Pediatric Eye Disease Investigative Group (PEDIG). In addition, he is a past President of the UAB School of Optometry Alumni Board. Dr. McCarty is an Eagle Scout and enjoys volunteering as a Den Leader and Cubmaster of his sons' Cub Scout Pack and serves as the Council Service Territory Commissioner of CST 14, Scouting America.
